So, still prevaricating on finishing Igor and got distracted again. This time by the Guardians of the Galaxy kits.
Picked this one up off eBay for a decent price because the box had been damaged (like I care, it’s already been thrown out). It is the 1:9 scale version from Dragon. There is a larger scale version of Rocket but this one has the full sized Groot and is in scale with the other Dragon kits.
Didn’t take any pictures of the parts but it’s all vinyl except for Rocket’s gun.
Assembly is pretty simple although the plugs on Groot were really tight in their sockets and I trimmed them just a little bit to assist with the fit. Were a few small gaps in some seams which was filled in before going any further.
One thing which is a bit annoying is that the base isn’t actually big enough for Groot and he hangs off the sides a bit. Dragon didn’t actually supply a base for Igor so I suppose this is better than nothing.
Close up of Rocket. Just need to fill the same gap around the jaw.
Close up of Groot:
So Groot got primed with black as I thought that would help with the shading and Rocket was done in classic grey.
Started working on Groot first. Painted him all over with a dark brown-black and then blocked in the larger bark panels with a darkish brown. This was then drybrushed with a tan colour and then finally on top of that with a dark flesh. Not sure if I’ve got it quite right and might be a little on the dark side. More mahogany than pine.
This is after working on the face and chest.
And with the majority done:
Onto Rocket. He’s not as good as Groot in my opinion. The detail in the fur is quite soft which makes it more difficult to bring out the detail, since it’s not there. Instructions are for an orange jumpsuit (the Hot Toy is the same as well) but looking at the moving it looks more like a chammy leather. Decided to go with the orange though simply to have a splash of colour and contrast with Groot, otherwise I run the risk of them looking quite similar.
Colours just blocked in at the moment.
Will start getting the light/dark patterns onto the fur next I think. Looking a bit flat at the moment.
Bit more work on the face and think I’ve nearly got it.
Bit more work on Rocket’s gun.
And it’s basically done.
