MDC Spaceman Part 4

Been a bit delayed in getting this done (visitors, lack of time, other things that needed doing) but finally found my “Dremel-a-like” drill and made a further modification which I’d had in my head.

So drilled out the base of the skull and backwards from the eye sockets to create a route for the LED lights to illuminate the eye sockets.  Then added a small, round ball of set acrylic putty into each socket. Will add a decal to the eye ball from the SFM:uk Eye Decals sheet (sorry now sold out).

Also got the few decals that are needed printed out on some inkjet sheets.  Managed to find a few Russian words on Google (hope they are right anyway) and printed them out.  There is a pilot label, which says Cosmonaut Smirnov, the label by the gauge at the back reads Oxygen and there is another which says Caution. Plus the Russian star and CCCP markings on the chest and there is a hammer and sickle for the base.

Used Smirnov because it is apparently the most common Russian surname.

Visor has now had 3 coats of Tamiya clear orange and starting to look nice and shiney.

And finally with the lights on.

So just need to put some matt coat on the painted parts, so sort of airhose around the front and then start to add so weathering.

Thanks to the folks over on SFM:uk who voted that this should be on Mars.

MDC Spaceman Part 3

Well had a bit of a browse on the interweb for pictures of spacesuits for some inspiration and to be honest they’re pretty dull.  Either all white or all silver.  So that didn’t provide much to work with.

So doing my own thing pretty much.  Still thinking of it being a Russian suit so wanted some red in there and rest metallic. So threw on some Halfords Primer and went to work with some Citadel paints while watching TV.

Probably not how it will finally look as not sure about the helmet part being same colour as the suit.  Wondering now if the brassy colour used for highlights might not be better?  But was going to do the visor with clear orange, so this may change the overall look and in that case the brass wouldn’t work well.

So here are where it is now.

MDC Spaceman Part 2

Not as much progress as I would have liked but have got the one modification I was planning achieved.

Drilled a hole down from top through the whole model and run some cables through to an LED in the top which is positioned just underneath the skull.

In the wooden base there is the remains of a battery pack and from an LED tealight which has an on/off switch.

MDC Spaceman Part 1

Picked up this kit at the Scalemodel World show in Telford last November and been keen to put it together, but the Viper Build has been the priority upto now.  So picked up a small wooden base for it at the South Cheshire Militaire (thanks to Blitzspear for spotting them) for a quid as the final thing I wanted before getting going.

So here are a few pictures of the kit itself before getting going on it.

It is a simple bust about 3 inches high (I’m guessing, didn’t actually measure it), which looks to be around 1:6 scale.  It is sold by MDC Models from a sculpt by Neil Roberts and is available from their website for £19.95.

I would guess (not knowing the sequence of release) that the Doctor Who episode “Silence in the Library” may have been the inspiration for the sculpt, where the people are eaten by the Vashta Nerada and the suits keep walking around with a skeleton inside.  The details of the suit are very different though, so if it is the case it is inspiration only and not a copy (compare the picture below to the bust one further down).

The kit has just 4 parts.  The main part of the bust, the top of the helmet, a vacuformed visor and the spaceman himself which is a skull (hence the similarity to the Doctor Who episode).

The quality of the casting is very high and there are no airbubbles or very much flash.  Clean up was done in a couple of minutes.

The clear helmet part is on a large disk and not entirely clear where to trim this to for best fit.  I went slowly cutting first the bottom part off and then a little more from the sides to get a good fit.  There are a few indentations in the clear part which affect the surface (presumably dings in the master which these were formed over) but looks like there are sufficient undamaged sections that the front can be unblemished.

Assembly is dead easy and once the clear part was trimmed is a 5 second job.

Next up will be a couple of small modifications and then start painting.  Thinking of Soviet looking at the moment but might well change in time.

Viper Squadron

Very pleased to say that all the Vipers for the build made it to the South Cheshire Militaire show in Crewe on Sunday 27th February 2011 and the whole thing looked fantastic.

Must say the show itself was very quiet compared to 2009 (which was the last show I attended there) and from what others were saying also compared to 2010.  Not sure why as the weather was OK, but the Carling Cup was on the TV…?

The main hall

The Viper Hanger was the main item on the SFM:uk table (in fact we concentrated on it so much we were a little short on models to fill out the rest of the space…will have to watch for that in future years).

So here are an absolute stack of pictures:

Individual Builds and Details

Apologies to those I didn’t take as many pictures of-thought I had them all pretty evenly covered but doesn’t seem to be the case.
